A WEEKEND AT FREDDY’S

I’ve been plugged into Fredericksburg, another Texas Hill Country jewel, for years.  At first it was just a town I went through to get to Kerrville.  The only time we would venture back to Fredericksburg was to go eat the little steak at Shorty’s Diner.  I can remember, in the seventies, walking into the Domino Parlor (or was it Hall?) and the townsfolk would change their conversations from English to German.  Clearly, I was the outsider.  Years later, when a family member built the business center by the hospital, we had to take out a couple of trees for the parking lot.  I thought we would be killed in our sleep.  Those Germans loved their trees and every inch of their German soil.  Good for them.  That pride is the reason Fritztown has retained...

WHEN THERE’S A VACANT CHAIR AT THE TABLE...

It’s Monday after Thanksgiving.  We’ve survived the first wave of the holiday season and lived to tell about it.  This year, Dennis and I went to Austin and enjoyed a late lunch with Doug and Mary Ann and their extended family.  The table was crowded and everyone contributed in food and conversation.  Isn’t it wonderful when the special day goes well?  I can’t say that’s always the case.  Sometimes, holidays don’t go as expected.  Sometimes, the holidays just plain suck.  Now, I’m coming out of my carb overdose and remembering what a former pastor said about the holidays.  He said holidays are like a microscope when all emotions are magnified.  If you’re happy, the holidays are happiest to the nth degree.  On the other hand, if you are sad, the holidays are, without a...
